Itinerary

Day 01 : Airport – Colombo

Soon after you arrive in Sri Lanka, an Aviato Travels representative will warmly welcome you at the airport. Your journey begins in Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.

On the way, enjoy a Colombo city tour, where you will see famous landmarks such as Galle Face Green, the Old Parliament, the Lighthouse Clock Tower, Colombo Harbour, Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square, and Viharamahadevi Park.

You will also have time to explore Fort and Pettah, popular areas for shopping. These streets are filled with small shops, so enjoy browsing and bargain for the best prices.

After the tour, you will check in to your hotel.

Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Colombo.

Day 02 : Colombo - Kandy

Your journey continues with an immersive city tour of Colombo, the island's vibrant commercial heart. Home to 1.6 million people, this cosmopolitan hub is a fascinating tapestry of history and modernity. You’ll witness a unique architectural "face" shaped by centuries of Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial influences, standing alongside contemporary skyscrapers and bustling street markets. This morning exploration offers a lively introduction to the island's diverse heritage before you begin your ascent into the cooler, emerald-green highlands.

Leaving the coast behind, you’ll travel approximately 165 km toward the sacred city of Kandy. Upon arrival and check-in at your tasteful hillside hotel, the remainder of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Whether you choose to unwind with a book or take a refreshing dip in the infinity pool, the spectacular panoramic views over the lush valley and the city below provide the perfect tranquil transition into the cultural soul of the country.

Day 03 : Kandy

Start your morning with a stroll through the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, a former royal pleasure garden world-renowned for its towering palm avenues and vibrant orchid collection. Afterward, visit the architectural gem of Gadaladeniya Temple, where you can admire rare late-medieval wall paintings and a unique stone-carved design that sets it apart from typical highland shrines.

The afternoon is dedicated to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist site, housing the legendary tooth of the Buddha. Your cultural immersion concludes with an evening performance of traditional Kandy dances. These rhythmic, high-energy rituals—once performed for royalty—remain a vital part of the island’s living heritage and provide a spectacular end to your day in the hill capital.

Day 04 : Kandy - Dambulla

Your journey north begins with a sensory exploration of Sri Lanka’s famous spice trade. On the way to Dambulla, we stop at a Matale spice garden to see "where the pepper grows." Here, you’ll discover the lush cultivation of cinnamon, cardamom, and cocoa, while learning how these plants are utilized in ancient Ayurvedic herbal medicine to promote wellness and healing.

The afternoon is dedicated to the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 1st century BC. This majestic rock temple features a monumental Buddha statue and over 2,000 square meters of intricate wall paintings—the largest decorated cave surface in the world. After exploring these historic caverns, retreat to your idyllically situated hotel by Lake Dambulla to relax and soak in the peaceful lakeside atmosphere.

Day 05 : Sigiriya

The morning is dedicated to the legendary Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a 5th-century citadel rising 182 meters above the jungle. As you ascend, you’ll encounter the world-famous "Cloud Maidens" frescoes—vibrant, 1,500-year-old paintings that remain remarkably preserved. Once you reach the summit of the "Lion Rock," you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the ancient royal gardens and the sweeping emerald landscape below.

In the afternoon, choose between a peaceful rest at your hotel or an optional "country tour" through the scenic village of Hiriwadunna. This immersive nature experience begins with a walk through a birdwatcher’s paradise—home to nearly 130 exotic species and vibrant butterflies—followed by a traditional ox cart ride and a serene boat trip across the lake. To finish the day, enjoy an authentic village visit, connecting with the local community over a cup of tea and traditional snacks to experience the warmth of rural Sri Lankan hospitality.

Day 06 : Polonnaruwa - Passikudah

Spend your morning stepping into the "Golden Era" at Polonnaruwa, the island’s second ancient capital. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a sprawling museum of 11th-century history, featuring the remarkably preserved royal palace ruins, intricate shrines, and the iconic statue of King Parakrama Bahu the Great. You’ll stand in awe of the Gal Vihara, where colossal Buddha figures are carved directly into the living rock, and explore the massive man-made reservoirs that still sustain the region today.

In the afternoon, trade the stone cities for the serene shores of the East Coast. The journey leads to Passikudah, home to one of the most beautiful bays on the island. Known for its pristine white sandy beaches and incredibly shallow, turquoise waters, it is the perfect spot for a tranquil swim. The gentle waves and crystal-clear lagoon offer a refreshing contrast to the morning’s historical trek, allowing you to unwind in a tropical paradise.

Day 07 : Passikudah

Embrace a day of pure relaxation on the sun-kissed shores of Passikudah, one of the island’s most tranquil coastal retreats. The bay is famous for its shallow, calm waters, allowing you to walk hundreds of meters into the turquoise sea with the water barely reaching your waist—making it an idyllic spot for a refreshing morning swim or a peaceful stroll along the soft, white sand.

Whether you choose to simply lounge under a palm tree or enjoy optional activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and scenic boat tours, the day is yours to soak in the effortless charm of the East Coast. As the sun sets over the bay, enjoy a quiet evening by the water, fully recharged by the natural beauty of this tropical paradise.

Day 08 : Nuwara Eliya - Udawalawe

Your journey turns southward today, leading you to the awe-inspiring site of Buduruwagala. Here, you’ll stand before seven majestic Buddha statues carved directly into a towering rock face, dating back to the 10th century. The central figure, standing at an incredible 17 meters high, is a masterpiece of ancient craftsmanship hidden within the serene forest, offering a moment of quiet reflection before your afternoon adventure.

In the afternoon, the landscape shifts to pure wilderness as you embark on an off-road jeep safari through Udawalawe National Park. Renowned for its thriving population of wild elephants, the park also offers sightings of water buffalo, sambar deer, and playful macaques. After tracking wildlife across the open plains, you’ll retreat to your accommodation for the night. Falling asleep to the nocturnal symphony of the wild, you'll experience the island's natural beauty in its most untouched form.

Day 09 : Udawalawe - Galle - Negombo

Your final day begins at the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe. This inspiring conservation project focuses on rehabilitating orphaned and injured elephant calves. Unlike traditional sanctuaries, the ETH minimizes human contact to ensure these majestic animals can successfully return to the wild. You'll have the heart-warming opportunity to watch from a viewing platform as the calves eagerly gather for their scheduled milk feeding—a truly ethical wildlife experience.

Next, you'll drive along the scenic southern coastline, stopping at Weligama to witness the iconic art of stilt fishing, where local fishermen balance on slender poles above the breaking waves. Your journey continues to the historic harbor town of Galle. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Galle is a fascinating blend of Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial influences. You’ll explore the vibrant local market and the beautifully preserved Dutch Fort, wandering through cobblestone streets lined with boutiques and cafes.

After a final lunch in the fort, you’ll head to Negombo/Colombo, arriving in the late afternoon. A day-use hotel room will be available for you to freshen up and relax before your nighttime transfer to the airport.
